.Porn and .Sex Domains – Save your Money

After the colossal failure of the ICM registry’s TLD release in 2011, ICM registry are now launching .porn and .adult top level domains, proving what so many in the adult industry always suspected. That it was never about moving the adult industry to the safer sidelines, and always about the money. This is the ICM gravy train.

rip off

The “failure” of ICM was not monetary. On the contrary, they made a fortune. However, while ICM are raking in millions for these “premium” domains, relatively few of the sites are being developed and virtually none of the top ranking adult domains are using the xxx extension. Clearly, the industry voted with its feet, and there’s no reason to suppose that the launch of 2 more adult related TLDs will change this. In fact, additional domains render the xxx offering even more impotent.

The truth is that this is all about sales. Who will the buyers be this time around? Probably mainstream companies who have had the fear of god put into them, and will try to “protect” their brands by purchasing these sex related domains. Nobody in the industry wants these domains. The buyers are everybody but the adult community. Buyers are domain name squatters hoping to make money in the future, and regular business who live in fear of having their bands tarnished. There are many more of these than there are adult film makers. And when it comes to domain squatting, good luck with that, ICM are making sure the best names aren’t even on offer. Yup, they keep the premium names for themselves.

And there’s the genius. ICM have managed to invent a monster and then sell insurance for customers to protect themselves against the monster they created. It reminds me of computer malware that gives you a virus – and then attempts to sell you the cure.

  1. At least brands can protect themselves from getting associated with adult niche. But to tell the truth, most business stick with .com and don’t really care what happens to other extensions.
