Breaking Into Porn: Review

With 4 DVDs totaling over 8 hours, Jack Lawrence’s Breaking Into Porn will give you just about all the information you need to decide if fucking in public is the right career move for you. And in a world where women dominate, what makes this tutelage unusual, is that Lawrence provides a rare and interesting look at the industry chiefly from the male perspective, with interviews from some of the biggest male names in the adult industry, including Marcus London, Tommy Gunn and Kurt Lockwood.

There’s plenty for women too of course, in particular, the final DVD from the AIM Healthcare Foundation which examines some of the psychological reasons women get into porn and the mental set required to succeed in the adult industry. And although primarily aimed at the making of straight pornography, the tips and lessons provided by gay-friendly Lawrence and his colleagues are equally applicable to the gay porno and fetish scenes. Even videographers will learn something about what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera.

Breaking into pornOne of the things that quickly becomes apparent watching this material, is that a Jack Lawrence is intelligent, educated and articulate, and his “No BS” evaluation of working in the industry is clear and incredibly honest. The pros and cons of the adult industry are examined in surprising detail from the mundane (genital warts and LA traffic) to the exotic (being bitten by a Black Widow spider on set and nearly losing his foot). No stone is left unturned, and at every opportunity Lawrence encourages responsibility, courtesy and above all, safety.

Infused with good humor, the most entertaining interview is undoubtedly with Kurt Lockwood. The contrast between Jack Lawrence’s sober style vs. Kurt Lockwood’s (inebriated?) style proves that the industry is populated by a surprisingly wide variety of characters and personality types. Looking like he just got in from a wild night on the town, Lockwood provides the classic perspective we all imagine to be true of the adult industry with underbelly tales that leave Lawrence looking more than a little uncomfortable at times. You can almost see the wheels turning in Lawrence’s head: “Is this really the sort of stuff I want in my video?” Well the answer is a resounding “yes.” Thanks for not leaving those gems on the cutting room floor!  And while you may have always  imagined characters on porn sets like those in Lockwood’s hysterical tales, what you may not have suspected is that there are folk in this industry like Jack Lawrence who are as respectful, courteous and professional as any mainstream profession.

If the only thing you learn from watching these DVDs is that the porn industry is not for you, then this could be the best $39 you’ve ever spent, because you’ll have saved yourself a massive headache and a ton of money. Because while it’s easy to find a real estate agent to tell you what it’s really like to be a Realtor, how many of us know a porn star in our neighborhood? And even if we did, would they really spill their guts and tell us their secrets? So if you’re serious but uncertain because you don’t know what the porn industry is really like, this warts and all collection (no pun intended) is an absolute must have.
